Urinary Tract Infections
A urinary tract infection, or UTI, is an uncomfortable infection that can happen anywhere along the urinary tract. Different parts of the urinary tract that can be infected, include:
- Kidneys and ureters (pyelonephritis)
- Bladder (cystitis)
- Urethra (urethritis)
Causes of Urinary Tract Infections
Urinary tract infections are very common, especially among women. UTIs are caused by bacteria that enter the urethra. Infections occur most commonly in the bladder and can potentially spread to the kidneys.
There are many risk factors that increase the chances of getting a UTI. Sexual activity, pregnancy, menopause and previous UTIs are all risk factors for women. For men, risk factors include prostate problems, uncircumcised penis, anal intercourse, HIV infection and unprotected sex with a woman who has a vaginal infection.
Burning, painful and frequent urination are common signs and symptoms of UTIs. Our immediate care providers can prescribe a UTI treatment for all of your symptoms. If you suspect an infection or if you have back or side pain, chills, fever, or vomiting, see us at Physicians Prompt Care as untreated UTIs can damage the kidneys.
Our physicians can diagnose your UTI in a number of ways. A urine sample can be analyzed for red blood cells, white blood cells and bacteria. A urine culture may be used in the lab to determine what bacteria caused your infection, and therefore which medication would be most effective for you. If you have frequent UTIs, you may need to see a specialist. Whichever way you are diagnosed, a Prompt Care physician can help you with the proper treatment.
UTI treatment will depend on the bacteria that caused your UTI. Most likely, your immediate care physician can perscribe you a course of antibiotics to clear up your infection. You may also need a pain killer for any painful or burning urination you may have caused by your UTI. If your UTIs are recurrent, you may need UTI treatment for the cause of your infections. Your Prompt Care physician will help find the best course of action for you.
